Rwanda, known as the “country of a thousand hills,” might not seem like the ideal location to introduce electric vehicles. Any vehicle would have trouble navigating the rough, rural terrain, but heavier battery-equipped vehicles in particular would struggle.
But the tiny, landlocked nation of Rwanda’s president wants to change its economy. Reducing greenhouse gas emissions and the country’s reliance on imported fossil fuels, which are responsible for the majority of the country’s foreign exchange expenditure, are important components of the plan.
To promote electric vehicles, the government has introduced a number of incentives. Electric vehicles, their spare parts, batteries, and the hardware for charging stations are exempt from import, excise, and VAT taxes.
Electricity that is significantly subsidised can be used to charge electric automobiles. Additionally, the government provides land for charging bays at no charge.
The Rwanda EV Charger Market accounted for $XX Billion in 2021 and is anticipated to reach $XX Billion by 2030, registering a CAGR of XX% from 2022 to 2030.
Kigali now has an electric vehicle charging station, thanks to Volkswagen Rwanda.
In collaboration with Siemens, Volkswagen Mobility Solutions Rwanda (VWMSR) presented its second electric car charging station. The new EV charging station is a part of the e-mobility pilot project and is situated at the Kigali Convention Center. The Rwandan Minister of Environment was present when the charging station was inaugurated.

As part of its pilot project to investigate the viability of electric mobility in Africa, VW constructed its first EV charging station at the Kigali Special Economic Zone.
Four e-Golfs were also introduced by the corporation for usage during the pilot phase. During the execution of the pilot project, VWMSR intends to install EV charging stations in numerous locations.
