GLOBAL SINGLE IN-LINE MEMORY MODULE (SIMM) MARKET

    INTRODUCTION

A SIMM is a class of memory module with random-access memory that has been used in computers since the beginning. The contacts on a SIMM are redundant on both sides of the module, unlike dual in-line memory modules, which are the most common type of memory module.

JEDEC’s JESD-21C standard was used to standardise SIMMs. For DDR, the majority of early PC motherboards used socketed DIP chips. Memory modules were developed to save motherboard space and facilitate memory expansion as computer memory capacity increased.

Only one additional memory module was required to extend the computer’s memory, as opposed to eight or nine single DIP chips. Simms’ initial iteration had 30 pins and offers 8 bits of data.

They were utilised in AT-compatible, 386- and 486-based, Macintosh Plus, Macintosh II, Quadra, Atari STE, Wang VS, and Roland electronic samplers in addition to Macintosh computers.

The second SIMMs type offers 32 bits of data and has 72 pins. They originally emerged in the early 1990s in later versions of the IBM PS/2, and later in systems built using the 486, Pentium, Pentium Pro, early Pentium II, and other contemporary/competing CPUs from other manufacturers.

On newly constructed computers by the middle of the 1990s, 72-pin SIMMs had taken the place of 30-pin SIMMs, and they were beginning to be replaced by DIMMs.

UNIX workstations and other non-IBM PCs may employ proprietary, non-standard SIMMs. The Macintosh IIfx makes use of 64-pin proprietary non-standard SIMMs.
