Ankle joints on prosthetic legs are typically usually passive and only move when the user applies pressure on them. Consequently, it may be challenging to walk upstairs or over uneven terrain.
However, a new type of prosthetic ankle known as a “smart prosthetic ankle” automatically changes the angle of the foot based on the user’s activity.
The prototype gadget is made up of a motor, actuator, sensors, and microchip. These allow it to identify the type of activity the user is now engaged in and adjust the foot’s angle to ensure that it is always in the proper direction.
To avoid getting stuck on the edge of the next step, for instance, when climbing stairs, the ankle will reflexively lift the front of the leading foot.
In essence, the ankle uses its built-in sensors (which detect motion and load) to ascertain how the user is interacting with the surroundings.
Through those sensors, the ankle then learns what the user is doing and modifies its behavior accordingly.
