A Zebra cell is made up of a solid positive electrode made of nickel and nickel chloride and a negative liquid sodium electrode in its charged condition.

 

The electrodes are physically separated from one another by an Al2O3 ceramic tube, which also ensures sodium ion transfer. The positive electrode is flooded with molten chloroaluminate, which is an equimolar eutectic mixture of sodium chloride and aluminium tri chloride, to ensure contact between the solid positive electrode and the ceramic electrolyte.NiCl is reduced to metallic Ni upon discharge, whereas sodium is oxidised into Na+ ions, creating sodium chloride.
