The process begins with the patterning of a mold, usually done by photolithography or micro-contact printing. The mold is then coated with a liquid polymer, such as polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS).

 

The liquid polymer is then cured, either by baking at elevated temperatures or by exposure to ultraviolet light. Once the polymer is cured, it is peeled off the mold, leaving behind the template pattern.
