All feasible plant operation strategies were examined as part of the DOE's Gen3 CSP research effort. The method, which DOE later chose Sandia National Laboratories to develop, employs ceramic particles that resemble sand rather than molten salt and can sustain temperatures of more than 800°C.
These particles can be utilised to operate a supercritical carbon dioxide (sCO2) turbine or transport and store heat. If built successfully, a solar power plant of this kind might supply 100 megawatts of power constantly and affordably, around the clock.
