A camera is an optical device that can capture images. Most cameras can take 2D photos, while some advanced ones can produce 3D images. Most cameras are made up of sealed boxes (the camera body) with a small hole (the aperture) that allows light to flow through to capture an image on a light-sensitive surface (usually a digital sensor or photographic film).
Cameras use a variety of methods to manipulate how light falls on a light-sensitive surface. The aperture of a lens can be narrowed or broadened to focus the light entering the camera. A shutter mechanism controls how long the photosensitive surface is exposed to light.

The evolution of the compact camera and its eventual demise as mass-market consumers migrated in droves to smartphones. That mirrorless cameras have been successful.
