Coal tar pitch is the residue of distillation, which is further processed into coal tar pitch with the necessary chemical and physical qualities. The primary goal of the coal tar distillation process is to yield a variety of tar acid compounds from crude tar.
Coal tar is a thick, dark liquid that is produced as a by-product of the coal-to-coke and coal-to-gas conversion process. Low-temperature coal tar, medium-temperature coal tar, and high-temperature coal tar are the three types based on the dry distillation temperature, with high-temperature coal tar having the largest share.
By continually flowing coal tar or a topped or partially distilled product through a pipe coil in a pipe coil still, it is heated. This heated material is then fed through the vacuum still in an indirect heat exchange relationship with the material being distilled.
The goal of tar distillation is to dehydrate the tar in the dehydration column, separate the tar oils in the fractionating column, and extract the pitch from the dehydrated tar in the pitch column. Because the quality of coal tar is determined by the coal carbonising process and because coal tar contains a large number of chemical compounds, the design and composition of the tar distillation plant changes depending on the kind of tar and the chemicals that must be distilled.
The elements of the tar escape from the coke ovens in the form of vapour, with a small amount of solid free carbon in an extremely finely split condition, during the coal carbonization process.

In collaboration with Yizhou Group, Koppers International B.V. will develop and build a tar distillation plant in Pizhou City, Jiangsu Province, China.
The tar distillation plant will be part of a three-unit integrated carbon manufacturing complex that includes a 300,000 metric tonne coal tar distillation plant and two downstream needle coke and carbon black production operations.
