     Time-correlated single photon counting, or TCSPC, is a common method for measuring time-domain fluorescence decays. The time of arrival of single photon events and the laser pulse that was used to excite the sample can be correlated theoretically. The fast clock known as the TAC is initiated by the START pulse and terminated by the STOP pulse.

     

    The growth of a ramp signal is initiated by the START pulse. The height of the ramp will be lower or higher depending on when the STOP pulse arrives. Counting individual photons with a single-photon detector (SPD) is a method known as photon counting.

     

    In contrast to a conventional photodetector, which produces an analog signal proportional to the photon flux, a single-photon detector produces a pulse of signal for each photon that is detected.

     

     Photon-detectors come in four main configurations: the Schottky barrier photodiode, the photoconductor, the avalanche photodiode (APD), and the PIN photodiode.
