    GLOBAL VENTILATORS MARKET

    INTRODUCTION

A medical ventilator is a form of artificial respiratory assistance machinery that is designed for providing ventilation to patients who are struggling with breathing. For this, utmost reliability and safety of the equipment is critical. The demand for ventilators is increasing with the increasing number of critically ill patients, high incidents of chronic illness, heart attack and respiratory diseases. Few factors such as high cost and ventilator associated pneumonia are hampering the growth of ventilators.

    MARKET DYNAMICS

High old age population, increased cases of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and lung disorders due to increase in air pollution has led to surge in the ventilator market.

The COVID-19 outbreak in December 2019 disease targets lungs and can cause complications like pneumonia and acute respiratory distress syndrome. Severe cases of these require ventilator to be able to deliver oxygen to the patients. This has caused  unrest in the market and ventilator production companies all over the world are producing the machines relentlessly.

The chart below depicts the growth of Invasive and Non-Invasive ventilators in the global market:

GLOBAL VENTILATORS MARKET BY PRODUCT TYPE

Invasive ventilators hold the highest market share and are expected to maintain its dominance in the market. This is attributed to, increase in patients with permanent breathing disability and the patients who are unlikely to recover in a certain period.

In China, as of March 3, 2020 ~720 patients were admitted to ICU and 7% of them were put on ventilators. The ICU mortality rate was ~80% in non-invasive ventilation and 87% in invasive ventilation.

    US VENTILATORS MARKET

There has been severe shortage of ventilators across USA. New York which has come out with most number of cases in the country might need 30,000 of these against the existing number of 6,000. US ventilators requirement is estimated at 960,000 units later this year, whereas it has only 200,000 of those machines right now.

The US government has turned towards the leading automakers in the country to lend a support in ventilation production. General Motors, Ford and Tesla have all pledged to support to offer resources for making ventilators.

    • Ford will start manufacturing ventilators (in partnership with GE) by 20th April 2020 and target to manufacture 1,500 units in April , 12,000 units by May end and 50,000 units by July.
    • Tesla is also examining how to help manufacture ventilators(with the help of Medtronic) and has even bought ~1,250 ventilators from China on an immediate basis

    EUROPE VENTILATORS MARKET

The outbreak in the Europe seems to be uncontrollable and this has led serious shortage of ventilators and ventilator shortage has forced the doctors to prioritise the patients to be saved. National Health Service (NHS) from UK has an access to about 12,000 ventilators and have requested for at least another 30,000 of these to support the patients. Various European engineering companies like Thales (France), GKN (UK), Renishaw (UK) and Airbus led by Meggitt have started working towards manufacturing ventilators.

    • In Italy, only 3,000 ventilators were available till March 2020. Italian automakers Ferrari and Fiat have come forward to provide support in manufacturing ventilators
    • Germany had 25,000 ventilators as of March 2020 and has ordered 10,000 more to combat the growing pandemic. But, owing to a very low <1% mortality rate , the country is confident it will be able to contain the outbreak

    CHINA VENTILATORS MARKET

China , world`s second biggest economy  is home for manufacturing plants of many automakers in the world. The worst hit region in the world China has started the production of these ventilators. They have already supplied 14,000 of non- invasive ventilators and 2,900 invasive ones to the Hubei region where the pandemic is said to be broke out.

    INDIA VENTILATORS MARKET

On 30th March 2020, the Indian government decided to procure 10,000 ventilators from China as Potential community transmission fears loom large on world`s second biggest populous country.

    RECENT VENTILATORS MARKET TREND

On the wake of call from the US government, the auto makers have halted car production and are about begin the ventilator production in those plants.

Mahindra Group has announced it would immediately begin the manufacturing of ventilators in its factories.

Army personnel in Italy have just joined in the production of ventilators by working for Siare Engineering International Group.

Bloom Energy fuel cell manufacturer from California has started to refurbish the old out of service ventilators.

Mysuru,India Based Skanray Technologies is one of the very few ventilator manufacturers in India. There has been a shortage of at least 70,000 ventilators across the country. Since there has been complete lockdown in the export of ventilators form India, there is high demand of these ventilators. India right now has about only 40,000 ventilators(~22% in public hospitals and 78% in Private hospitals) and the immediate supply of these machines is crucial.

    MARKET SIZE AND FORECAST

There has been global outcry towards the pandemic and various fields are coming together to diminish the damage in best possible way. Chinese manufacturers are estimated to supply 14,000 of the non-invasive ventilators in the month of April.

HSBC has started working with the ventilator manufacturing companies by offering fast-track loans at cheap interest rates, who are supplying the machines to UK hospitals.

Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) UK has started look into simpler design of ventilators which are able to manufacture rapidly.

UK manufacturers such as Vauxhall and Airbus are planning to 3D print the parts of the ventilators to speed up the production process.

The global ventilators market is expected to expand by 5-6X YOY to $XX Million in 2020.
