An X filter is a substance positioned in front of an X-ray source to selectively change the distribution of X-ray wavelengths within a given beam and reduce the strength of specific wavelengths from the source’s spectrum. When X-rays strike matter, some of the beam’s energy is absorbed by the material and some of it is transmitted through the substance.
For incident photons with higher energy, the amount absorbed tends to be less due to the mass absorption coefficient of the medium. When X-rays with enough energy cause electron energy level changes in the atoms of the absorbing substance, this is considered true absorption. These X-rays’ energy is employed to excite the atoms and does not persist outside of the substance (thus being “filtered” out).
Due to this, there are periodic spikes in the absorption characteristics of any particular material corresponding to each of the atomic energy level transitions, despite the general trend of lower absorption at higher energy wavelengths.
Absorption edges are the name for these spikes. As a result, every material preferentially blocks X-rays that are roughly equal to and slightly over the levels of their electrons while generally allowing X-rays that are somewhat less energetic to pass through relatively unharmed.
