Kenya is one of the largest producers of avocado in the world and is planning to double its avocado export in the next five years.
Majority of avocado production in Kenya is by small-scale growers. They grow it for subsistence, local markets, and export purposes.
The Kenyan government, recognizing the potential to increase exports and boost smallholder welfare, recently started encouraging more smallholder farmers to connect with exporters. But integration with export markets remains a difficult barrier for individual smallholder farmers to overcome.

India has recently granted market access for Kenyan avocados, a strategic move communicated to the World Trade Organization (WTO) and the first shipment arrived in Sep 2023.

This move is driven by the growing demand for avocados in India, coupled with Kenya’s reputation as a major producer of high-quality avocados. The export initiative is expected to not only bolster Kenya’s economy but also enhance bilateral trade relations between the two countries.

Kenya has gained international recognition for its avocado production, particularly the popular Hass variety.
