Carbon fibres are extremely rigid, powerful, and light filaments used in polymer (often epoxy) matrix composites for aircraft structures and jet engine parts. For structural elements, polymer composites with carbon fibres can be up to five times stronger than mild steel while also being five times lighter.
In comparison to almost every form of metal, including the high-strength alloys used in airframe and engine components, carbon fibre composites have greater fatigue characteristics and corrosion resistance.
The Global Aircraft carbon fiber engine market accounted for $XX Billion in 2022 and is anticipated to reach $XX Billion by 2030, registering a CAGR of XX% from 2024 to 2030.
The GE9X engine, which will power the Boeing 777X twin-aisle wide-body aircraft, is being developed by General Electric (GE) Aviation as a novel composite fan blade employing the most recent carbon fibre composite material.
To strengthen the blade even further, a steel alloy will be added to the material along with strong carbon fibre and a new epoxy resin. Contrary to previous GE wide-body engines now in use, the GE9X engine, according to the manufacturer, will have fewer and thinner composite fan blades.
The GE9X engine's overall performance and fuel consumption will be improved by a fan with fewer, thinner blades that will improve airflow and be lighter and more efficient. The GE9X fan blades are the fourth-generation composite design and are built on the GE90-94B, GE90-115B, and GEnx engine versions.
An 11-stage high-pressure compressor, a third-generation twin annular pre-swirl combustor, ceramic matrix composite material in the combustor and turbine, a composite fan box with a diameter of 133 inches, and 16 composite fan blades are all features of the GE9X engine.
The new GE9X engine program for technology maturation testing this year includes the performance testing of the fan in a universal propulsion simulator and the testing of ceramic matrix composite parts in a GEnx engine. With preparations for flight testing on a flying test bed, the business intends to do the first full core test and test the first engine.
