While contract farmers rear over half of Australia’s meat chickens, meat exports account for a smaller proportion of total output and are dominated by low-value portions such as edible offal and chicken feet.
According to the Market Insights for Australia’s Chicken Meat Industry report, whole chicken meat demand is expected to remain relatively high, future demand will be influenced by a number of factors, including a growing number of consumers limiting or reducing their meat consumption; and developing consumer interest.
With this in mind, the AgriFutures Chicken Meat Programme RD&E Plan intends to increase the sector’s long-term prosperity by addressing concerns and opportunities that will drive its sustainability, productivity, and profitability.
