Covestro and X2F have launched a new partnership to develop cutting-edge in-mold electronics for automotive lighting. The new Makrolon® polycarbonate (PC) heat-sink weighs about half as much as an equivalent metal element.

 

It is a component of an in-mold assembly that can be used to incorporate LED modules directly into the headlamp housing, reducing the weight and effort required to install brackets, screws, thermal pastes, and adhesives. The X2F technology has been proven in high-volume series manufacturing for other applications and is prepared for production.

 

Without fundamentally altering the design of the heat-sink adjuster module, this innovative program uses controlled viscosity moulding by X2F to directly attach the LED module to the thermally conductive heat-sink. They are satisfied with the X2F project's results to date and eager to see how the automotive industry will apply the technology.

 

Recently, they have observed improved thermal management performance in comparison to conventional injection-moulding techniques. A step-change improvement for their customers is made possible by this ground-breaking technology, which makes it possible to produce thermoplastic parts that were previously impossible to shape.
