A rotary engine is smaller and lighter than a piston engine and has a higher power-to-weight ratio. It is quieter and smoother since it has no reciprocating parts â simply a three-sided rotor spinning in a casing. The rotary also provides excellent performance for a given displacement.
Rotary engines, also known as Wankel engines, are a type of internal combustion engine that transforms heat from the combustion of a high pressure air/fuel mixture into usable work for the rest of the automobile.
They are most commonly found in Mazda RX-7s. The rotary engine operates on the same basic concept as the piston engine: combustion in the power plant produces energy that is used to power the vehicle. However, the rotary engine's delivery system is completely unique.
The Global automotive rotary engine genset market accounted for $XX Billion in 2022 and is anticipated to reach $XX Billion by 2030, registering a CAGR of XX% from 2023 to 2030.
Mazda introduces a series-hybrid plug-in version of the MX-30 EV with a rotary engine generator. The Mazda MX-30 e-Skyactiv R-EV, a plug-in series hybrid model with a rotary engine as a generator, made its international debut at the Brussels Motor Show.
(An earlier post.) The Mazda MX-30 debuted in 2020 as the company's first mass-production battery electric vehicle, with a mild hybrid model following in some non-European markets. The MX-30 e-Skyactiv R-EV is a series plug-in hybrid that maintains the same consumer values as the original MX-30 while also introducing new methods to use the car as a battery electric vehicle.
The MX-30 e-Skyactiv R-EV offers a battery-electric driving range of 85 kilometres, which is sufficient for daily driving demands, as well as the ability to use a generator for long distance drives.
The full driving range is powered by an electric motor. Mazda chose to power this generator using a rotary engine, taking use of the rotary engine's unique ability to deliver the required output with a tiny power unit.
