In general, silicones themselves are not strong lubricants in high-load bearing applications because of the weak intermolecular interactions.

 By using the pin-on-disc method, the dispersions' lubricating qualities in steel-steel contact were investigated. Testing was done with a high normal load of 68.9 N and a low speed of 0.008 m/s.

 

In comparison to pure ethylene glycol, the composite containing 10 wt% of GO in the silica matrix demonstrated a 38% reduction in the coefficient of friction in ethylene glycol and a 31% reduction in the coefficient of disc wear.

 

In comparison to pure silica and pure GO, silica/GO composites offered decreased friction and wear rates during ethylene glycol lubrication.
