A flexible, typically thermosetting resin produced by copolymerization of an epoxide with a molecule that has two hydroxyl groups and is mostly utilised in coatings and adhesives called epoxy resin under hood.
Epoxies may stick to wood, metal, glass, stone, and some polymers and are more heat- and chemical-resistant than the majority of glues. Epoxy resins are mostly used in coatings, flooring, concrete restoration, crack repair, and as a material for tile joints in construction projects.
Due to the high temperatures present, under-hood applications in internal combustion engine driven cars present some of the biggest obstacles for employing polymer matrix composites (PMCs) in automotive applications. For instance, temperatures in an engine typically range , but they can rise to several hundred °C in close proximity to the combustion chamber and exhaust ports.
At high temperatures, PMCs may exhibit poor structural performance, cracking, excessive creep, mass loss, and even thermal deterioration. However, there is also a significant opportunity when deploying PMCs in background applications.
The Global automotive under- hood epoxy resin market accounted for $XX Billion in 2022 and is anticipated to reach $XX Billion by 2030, registering a CAGR of XX% from 2023 to 2030.
The ER2223 from Electrolube is a black epoxy resin with a remarkable broad operating temperature range of -40°C to +180°C. The chemical resistance of the very stable epoxy at high temperatures allows it to withstand a wide range of chemicals and fluids present in the under-the-hood environment of an automobile.
Because of its low viscosity, this resin exhibits good adherence to a wide range of substrates and makes it simple to pot even the smallest or most tightly packaged components.
Black epoxy resin ER2225 is similarly designed to offer the same level of chemical resistance as ER2223, but it also permits brief temperature excursions up to +210oC. Due to the addition of fillers, ER2225 is more viscous than ER2223 and when the resin is fully cured, it has a thermal conductivity of 1.1 W/m.K. RoHS-2 compliant and suitable, ER2223 and ER2225.
