Carbon fiber made unmanned aerial vehicles what they are today. This amazing composite is malleable enough to be molded or machined into exactly the shape you need for your design while retaining its lightweightness, strength, and structural integrity better than plastics or aluminum.
Today, almost all UAV structures are made from carbon fiber composites. It’s an incredibly small diameter fiber (or filament) made mostly of carbon atoms. This is in contrast to piloted aviation, where a large percentage of the structure today is made from aluminum and titanium in addition to carbon fiber composites.
Carbon fiber composites offer great benefit in drone making. Its malleability allows machining carbon fiber sheets into various shape relatively easy. The high percentage of carbon atoms in it gives it the advantage of high tensile strength, high stiffness, and low weight.
The Global Carbon fiber drone market accounted for $XX Billion in 2022 and is anticipated to reach $XX Billion by 2030, registering a CAGR of XX% from 2023 to 2030.
Xiaomi’s Yi Erida drone with carbon-fibre build launched.
Smartphone maker Xiaomi’s sub brand Yi launched its carbon-fibre ‘Erida’ drone at the CES tradeshow in Las Vegas. However, the company did not reveal the price and availability of the drone.
The Erida drone is said to fly at a maximum speed of 75 miles per hour (roughly 120 kmph) for up to 40 minutes. It has a carbon-fiber coated body with a three rotor design unlike other drones which typically have four rotors. Yi claims that the omission of a rotor makes the Erida drone slightly more lightweight and agile.
It further claims that the build quality of the drone is 5 times stronger as compared to steel. The new drone features the company’s YI 4K action camera that can record videos in 4K resolution at 30fps. It has a 12MP sensor with f/2.8 aperture, and 155-degree wide angle lens.
The drone’s rotors can also be folded for the device to fit in tight spaces. The YI Erida features patented folding rotors offering a compact design, making the drone extremely portable, whether in the backyard or around the world. It’s controlled from any mobile device using the compatible YI Erida mobile app, making a remote obsolete.
