A flatcar is a type of rolling stock that has an open, flat deck mounted on two trucks or bogies, one with four or six wheels at each end. In some cases, flat cars with unusually large or heavy loads are mounted on a pair of bogies beneath each end.
The car’s deck may be made of steel or wood, and it may have pockets on the sides for pegs or tie-down points for securing goods. Sliding chain assemblies are recessed into the deck of flatcars made specifically to transport machinery. For cargo that are too big or heavy to load into enclosed cars like boxcars, flatcars are employed. As part of intermodal freight transport transportation, they are frequently utilised to convey intermodal containers or trailers.

To prevent tipping, these flatcars must be loaded symmetrically, with half the payload on one side of the centerbeam and the other.
