The CO2 Cascade Refrigeration System from M&M is designed around a cascade system that combines the benefits of CO2 at low temperatures and ammonia at high temperatures.
Only CO2 is present in the working, processing, and storage sections; ammonia is only present in the engine room. On the low temperature side of the cascade system, CO2 is used, and on the high temperature side, ammonia. This limits the ammonia charge to the plant room.
Both stages of the cascade are connected by a heat exchanger where the heat from CO2 condensation is dissipated together with NH3 evaporation.
The Global CO2 Cascade Refrigeration System market accounted for $XX Billion in 2023 and is anticipated to reach $XX Billion by 2030, registering a CAGR of XX% from 2024 to 2030.
In the United States, a cutting-edge NH3/CO2 cascade system has been deployed. A Columbus, Georgia, supermarket that uses a CO2/ammonia cascade refrigeration system has been able to achieve the highest EPA accreditation, known as GreenChill Platinum.
The recently completed Piggly Wiggly store was constructed in close collaboration with Kysor/Warren, a unit of Heatcraft Worldwide Refrigeration. The EPA estimates that an average American supermarket releases 1,000 pounds of dangerous refrigerant gas into the atmosphere every year.
At least 95% of such emissions are reduced at the GreenChill Platinum-certified store. This warehouse is believed to go farther by employing HFC refrigerants to reduce its annual global warming impact to just 1% of a conventional shop.
Ammonia and carbon dioxide are used as refrigerants in a cascade run in the cascade cooling system design. With the Kysor/Warren design, they were able to minimise the ammonia refrigerant to just 3/4 pounds per tonne of refrigeration, for a total of 53 pounds, which are entirely contained on the supermarket rooftop.
Reduced ammonia load eliminates the need for on-site engineers and other ammonia application-specific requirements.
In certain regions, its NH3/CO2 cascade system can offer significant energy savings as compared to conventional transcritical HFC and CO2 systems, in addition to offering significant advantages in direct emissions.
The cascade system design is also quite customizable and may be made with different secondary refrigerants to suit the needs of various retailers.
