Discovery SP-8310, a 37 percent bio-based, breathable, multi-purpose resin, has been introduced by Covestro, a global leader in coating resin solutions for the decorative industry, to enable exterior coatings with improved outdoor durability and enhanced bio-based content.

The new solution, which is a member of Covestro's Discovery family of resins with up to 52 percent bio-based content, meets the demand for more durable outdoor coatings in the decorative coating industry.

Painters and customers are increasingly looking for external painting systems that last longer across the decorative coatings market.

Adhesion and durability are the two main concerns for painters in outdoor paints, according to Covestro's in-house research on painters and consumers.

To enable long-lasting paint systems with high breathability and elasticity, the solution also offers good water vapour permeability and high elongation.

In comparison to non-bio-based water-based alternatives, Decovery SP-8310 can enable a carbon footprint reduction of up to 8% due to its 37% bio-based content (as confirmed by 14C analysis).

This impact is comparable to one million football fields of forest when one takes into consideration the annual consumption of the decorative wood coating market.

Decovery SP-8310 creates new opportunities for safer, more sustainable coatings manufacturing as well as external coatings that last longer and contain more bio-based materials.
