      However, over time, when the sacrificial anode stops working due to magnesium depletion or the formation of an irremovable film over the anode, the tin plating accelerates tank deterioration because it creates a highly corrosive electrolytic cell.The element is fixed to the tank wall, and the steel of the tank is electrically isolated from the sheath. 

     

    Additionally, a zinc block may be fixed to the heating element assembly’s wall. In this configuration, the anodic coating serves as a bleeder anode for the discharge of current originating from the electrolytic current from the primary anode to ground.

     

    This heating element assembly does not combine with the tank walls to create an electrolytic cell that is corrosive.  In some installations where the stored water is more corrosive, a mass or a piece of zinc is installed on the sheath and its base and is also electrically insulated from the metal of the tank.
