Magnetic proximity sensors, which pick up the magnetic field of a magnet built into the cylinder piston, are the most popular type of sensor used with pneumatic cylinders. The sensor, which is attached to the body of the pneumatic cylinder, will signal "ON" or "OFF" depending on how close it is to the magnet.
The position of the pistons in pneumatic cylinders is determined via cylinder sensors. They are fitted directly to the cylinder. The piston's ring magnet is detected via the housing wall's non-magnetic substance (e.g. aluminium, brass or stainless steel).

The cylinder in the magnetic kind has narrow walls and is made of a non-magnetic substance, but it is also a strong magnet that drags a magnetic traveller along from the outside.

Installation can be made simpler by inserting the sensor into a C-groove from the top rather than the side. A built-in tab on the sensor's side keeps the sensor in place to enable one-handed attachment.
The BIM-UNR sensor also features a hexagon mounting screw that only needs to be turned a quarter turn to lock the sensor in place. The sensor stays fixed even if the cable is yanked because this mounting screw is situated close to the cable outlet.
