Ethanol is a renewable fuel made from “biomass,” a collection of plant materials. To oxygenate the fuel and reduce air pollution, more than 98% of gasoline in the United States contains ethanol, typically E10 (10% ethanol, 90% gasoline).
Jet A, a fuel of the kerosine variety with a maximum freeze point of -40 degrees Celsius; Jet A-1, a fuel of the kerosine variety that is identical to Jet A but has a maximum freeze point of -47 degrees Celsius; and Jet B, a fuel of the wide-cut variety. Jet A and Jet A1 are the two main types of jet fuel.
Although both fuels can be used interchangeably by pilots for flight operations, there are some manufacturing differences. Corrosive is ethanol. Acidic compounds are produced when ethanol naturally interacts with oxygen in the air to form, resulting in fuel system component corrosion and engine wear.
Corrosion of all metals is accelerated when ethanol and water are present. The majority of aircraft with turbine engines can use A-1 jet fuel. It is the most widely used jet fuel in the world. Although it has the same minimum flash point as Jet A fuel, there are some differences. It has additives that prevent static and has a lower freezing point (-47 °C).
The Global Ethanol-Based Jet Fuel market accounted for $XX Billion in 2023 and is anticipated to reach $XX Billion by 2030, registering a CAGR of XX% from 2024 to 2030.
New ethanol-to-jet fuel technology is announced by Honeywell. In light of the Biden administration’s call for the aviation industry to reduce emissions, the technology company Honeywell International Inc. (HON.O) announced on Monday that it will implement technology that could increase supplies of lower-carbon aviation fuel produced from ethanol.
Sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) production efficiency can be improved by Honeywell technology to reduce costs. Due to the inability of fuel to be easily substituted for other forms of power, the airline industry is regarded as one of the most challenging to decarbonize. In an effort to reduce emissions, oil refiners have been working to increase SAF production.
We’ve been looking at different ways to economically produce more SAF that people can adopt on a large scale and produce to replace a significant portion of the jet and diesel pools as demand for SAF has grown.
Compared to petroleum-based jet fuel, the company claims that its technology can cut greenhouse gas emissions by 80% over the course of its entire lifecycle, depending on the type of ethanol feedstock used. In the United States, corn is the main ingredient used to make ethanol.
