EV Bidirectional used as mobile battery storage can improve a site's building infrastructure's resilience and ability to respond to demand.

 

When paired with another EVSE that has the same capabilities, a bidirectional EV can both receive energy (charge) from an EVSE and give energy to an external load (discharge).

 

Bidirectional vehicles can charge from a vehicle to a building (V2B) or from a vehicle to a specific load (V2L) to provide backup power to structures or specific loads, sometimes as part of a microgrid, or from a vehicle to the grid (V2G) to supply power to the grid.

 

Solar photovoltaic (PV) arrays and other distributed energy resources (DERs) can be complemented by V2B and V2G power solutions, and diesel generators can be used as a backup power source in addition to these DERs.

 

A fixed-ratio converter works similarly to a transformer but converts dc to dc with an output voltage that is a defined percentage of the input voltage rather than ac to ac.

 

Similar to a transformer, the converter does not regulate the output voltage; instead, the device's "turns ratio" determines how the input and output voltages are transformed.Its voltage step-down capability is given as a fraction in relation to this turn ratio, also known as the K factor.

 

K factors are chosen based on PDN architecture and the PoL regulator design criteria, and they can range from K = 1 to as low as K = 1/72.Low voltage (LV), high voltage (HV), and ultra-high voltage are the three categories for typical PDN voltages (UHV).
