Eaton develops a 48-volt aftertreatment heater controller to help manufacturers meet emissions regulations.A 48-volt programmable power electronics control device for electrically heated catalysts that commercial vehicle producers can utilise to adhere to increasingly stringent international emissions standards.

 

To reduce dangerous nitrogen oxide (NOx) exhaust emissions, the exhaust aftertreatment catalyst must be quickly warmed up and maintained at a warm temperature throughout low engine load operation.

 

The Eaton 48-volt electrical system portfolio, which includes a variety of technologies that enable manufacturers to incorporate 48-volt systems in next-generation automobiles, includes the air-cooled electric catalytic heater controller.

 

Power electronics controllers for Eaton electric heaters are being developed for systems requiring 2 kW to 15 kW of power and have a peak efficiency of up to 99%. The controller's functions include receiving power directions from the aftertreatment system, enabling soft-start and -stop capabilities to help maintain system voltage management, and providing diagnostic feedback for the heating element.

 

This technology is readily accessible as global emissions rules for cars are becoming more stringent. The adoption of the next phase of emissions regulations, known as Euro VII for heavy-duty diesel trucks, is planned.

 

More stricter rules are being introduced by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and California Air Resources Board. Collectively, the new laws aim to cut tailpipe NOx limits by up to 90%, which will make it more urgent for manufacturers all around the world to use additional emission-reducing techniques like electric catalyst heating.
