Gel permeation chromatography (GPC), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (FTIR), and mass spectrometry (MS) was used to characterize solvent-free hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI)-based polyisocyanates that were made by cyclotrimerizing HDI monomer with tri-n-butylphosphine (TBP) as a catalyst.
The GPC results showed that the polyisocyanates’ molecular weight distribution was affected by the reaction time, temperature, and TBP concentration. By combining MS, FTIR, and NMR, the polyisocyanates’ structures were identified and confirmed.
Beyond the primary product of trimer oligomers, the product contains dimer, pentamer, heptamer, and higher-molecular-weight oligomers. Since Otto Bayer discovered polyurethanes in 1937, they have been one of the most versatile materials, possessing excellent thermal and mechanical properties.
Polyurethanes are widely used in both established fields like coatings, adhesives, fibers, elastomers, and foams and emerging fields like bionic materials and nanocomposites.
Polyurethanes are typically made by combining polyisocyanates and polyols in a reaction. Two-package polyurethanes are important to the polyurethane industry because of the various designs in their formulations.
The Global HDI Based Polyisocyanate Market accounted for $XX Billion in 2023 and is anticipated to reach $XX Billion by 2030, registering a CAGR of XX% from 2024 to 2030.
On June 2, 2015, a new production line for Duranol polycarbonatediol (PCD) and a second line for Duranate hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI)-based polyisocyanate was inaugurated at Asahi Kasei Chemicals’ plant in Nantong, China.
The new Duranol line went into commercial operation in November 2014, and the second Duranate line went into commercial operation in May 2015. Around 140 people from China and Japan, including customers and other related parties, attended the ceremony.
Our HDI polyisocyanate business has grown steadily since the first Duranate line opened in Nantong in 2007. By providing high-performance and high-quality polyurethane products, the new Duranol line and the second Duranate line improve our capacity to expand into China and other Asian nations.
We can significantly expand our business from Nantong, which is an excellent location. PCD is used to make high-performance polyurethanes that are resistant to water and heat in addition to being extremely durable. As the market for higher-performance polyurethane increasingly shifts, demand for PCD is rising worldwide.
Duranol, a highly functional PCD developed by Asahi Kasei Chemicals, enables polyurethanes to be obtained with greater softness than is possible with ordinary PCD and features greater compatibility than ordinary PCD.
The Asian PCD market for polyurethane coatings, UV-curable polyurethanes, and polyurethanes for synthetic leather in automotive interiors is dominated by DuranolTM.
It is anticipated that demand for highly functional PCD will continue to rise throughout Asia, particularly in China, which is a major center for the production of automobiles and consumer electronics.
