Last Updated:  Apr 25, 2025 | Study Period: 2023-2030

INDIA ADAPTIVE CRUISE CONTROL MARKET

INTRODUCTION

Adaptive cruise control is a cruise control advanced driver-assistance system for road vehicles that automatically adjusts the vehicle speed to keep a safe distance from vehicles ahead. It is also known by 20 different names that explain the same fundamental operation.

Adaptive cruise control (ACC) is a type of cruise control that improves on traditional cruise control. ACC automatically adjusts your vehicle's speed to match that of the vehicle in front of you.

If the vehicle in front of you slows down, ACC will automatically match it. Reduce the possibility of collisions by controlling speed and increasing spacing. Drivers are less stressed while driving. Enhanced driving comfort, particularly for people with disabilities. Easier commuting, especially for systems with stop-and-go capabilities.

RECENT DEVELOPMENT

Typically, a radar sensor is at the heart of adaptive cruise control (ACC). The technology, which is installed in the front of the vehicle, constantly monitors the road ahead. As long as the road ahead is clear, ACC will maintain the driver's pace.

If the system detects a slower vehicle within its detecting range, it slows speed gradually by releasing the accelerator or engaging the brake control system. The ACC automatically accelerates to the driver's selected speed if the car ahead accelerates or changes lanes.

Conventional ACC is engaged at speeds of roughly 30 km/h (20 mph) and assists the driver, mainly on cross-country trips or on motorways. At speeds less than 30 km/h, the ACC stop & go mode is also operational (20 mph). It can maintain the predetermined distance to the preceding vehicle even at very low speeds and can come to a complete stop.

If the car has an automatic transmission and the traffic stop is just temporary, ACC stop & go can restart the vehicle. When the car is stopped for an extended period of time, the driver just needs to reactivate the system, for example, by momentarily pressing the gas pedal to return to ACC mode.

In this approach, ACC stop & go assists the driver even in congested areas. Because ACC is a comfort and convenience system, brake interventions and vehicle acceleration are limited. Even with ACC turned on, it is the driver's responsibility to keep an eye on the speed and distance between the car in front.
