The largest distribution system operator in Italy, Enel Distribuzione, a subsidiary of the Enel Group, received the commissioning of an Energy Storage System (ESS) from NEC Corporation today. The ESS is the largest in Italy and one of the largest in Europe since it can store two-megawatt hours (2MWh) of renewable energy for release into the grid as needed.

 

In the province of Calabria, where renewable energy sources, including as photovoltaic and wind production facilities, have been largely adopted, the ESS has been connected to the Chiaravalle primary substation.

 

The high proportion of inherently variable and intermittent renewable energy resources may cause grid reliability issues due to reverse power flows from the medium voltage (MV) grid to the high voltage (HV) grid, which occurs when the amount of renewable power generated exceeds current consumption levels. It raises new concerns about system stability, voltage quality, and peak load control. At all times, supply and demand must be balanced.

 

Voltage and frequency variations could impair or even kill electronic devices if they are not. Enel Distribuzione is testing various peak shaving, power balancing, power quality, voltage regulation, and frequency regulation capabilities using NEC's ESS to address these problems.

 

Enel Distribuzione is experimenting with cutting-edge distribution and auxiliary services with the help of NEC's storage solution. The ESS will be utilised in particular to regulate the flow of energy between their network and the National Grid.

 

Enel Distribuzione estimates the volume of energy flow from their key substations to the national grid and provides the Transmission System Operator (TSO) with the data from the Energy Exchange Profile.

 

When fluctuations in renewable energy generation cause the gap between the Energy Exchange Profile and actual energy flow to surpass the threshold, NEC's ESS works to reduce the gap by flexibly charging or discharging the batteries.

 

The smart grid infrastructure of Enel will eventually be integrated with NEC's ESS to provide a two-way, real-time information exchange of electricity demand. This infrastructure is based on an automated metre management system with smart metres installed at homes, offices and factories, in addition to new innovative big data analytics and IT systems.

 

NEC has emerged as the top supplier of lithium-ion grid energy storage devices in the world according to its recently announced acquisition of A123 Energy Solutions.

 

NEC will further progress its Smart Energy business to build cutting-edge infrastructure solutions that contribute to a better society by integrating its market-leading ICT technology with A123 Energy Solutions' system integration experience.
