Piston position sensing on pneumatic cylinders is done using cylinder sensors. They are fitted directly to the cylinder. Through the housing wall made of non-magnetizable material, the piston's ring magnet is sensed (e.g. aluminium, brass or stainless steel).
The pneumatic cylinder's piston ring contains permanent magnets, which the magnetic cylinder sensor can detect by penetrating the nonmagnetic cylinder wall. The sensor's output alters when the piston approaches it.
