Piston position sensing on pneumatic cylinders is done using cylinder sensors. They are fitted directly to the cylinder. Through the housing wall made of non-magnetizable material, the piston's ring magnet is sensed (e.g. aluminium, brass or stainless steel).

 

The pneumatic cylinder's piston ring contains permanent magnets, which the magnetic cylinder sensor can detect by penetrating the nonmagnetic cylinder wall. The sensor's output alters when the piston approaches it.

 

The sensor's built-in LED provides information about the switch's status. In holding applications where stronger magnetic fields are required, rod (cylinder) magnets are long, circular magnets with a diameter that is greater than their length.

 

Magnetic sensors have the working principle based on the measurement of changes in magnetic moment of magnetic material when exposed to magnetic fields.
