 Methylcyclohexane is a cycloalkane that has had a single methyl group substituted for cyclohexane. It functions as an aprotic solvent, a metabolite in plants, and a metabolite in people.

 

It is a volatile chemical molecule and a cycloalkane. It comes from the cyclohexane hydride.

 

An odourless liquid with a benzene-like scent is methylcyclohexane. It is synthesised into organic compounds and utilised as a solvent. Due to the addition of a single methyl group to one carbon of the cyclohexane ring, methylcyclohexane is a monosubstituted cyclohexane.

 

It interconverts quickly between two chair conformers, just like all cyclohexanes do. When the methyl group is in an equatorial rather than an axial position, the monosubstituted methylcyclohexane takes on its lowest energy state. The concept of A value represents this equilibrium.

 

Because there are axial hydrogen atoms on the same side of the ring in the axial position, the methyl group undergoes steric crowding (steric strain) (known as the 1,3-diaxial interactions).

 

Each pairwise methyl/hydrogen combination contributes about 7.61 kJ/mol of strain energy, and there are two of these interactions.

 

Since the equatorial conformation encounters no such contact, it is the conformation that is energetically preferred.

TOXICITY OF METHYLCYCLOHEXANE AND ITS EFFECTS

Male and female SD rats were given different doses of methylcyclohexane subcutaneously every day for five days a week for a total of 13 weeks (0, 10, 100, and 1,000 mg/kg/day for each group).

 

By tracking changes in body weight, haematological changes, pathological results, and effects on the reproductive system at each distinct concentration, the testing substance's toxicity was confirmed.

 

Animal deaths have occurred in the 1,000 mg/kg/day group in some instances. Haematological alterations, including a decline in the red blood cell count, were seen in the animals that lived.

 

Pathological changes in the liver, kidneys, and other organs were discovered, along with a significant weight gain or loss.

 

The 10 and 100 mg/kg/day groups, however, did not result in any fatalities or other specific problems. Hormone levels changed in terms of reproductive toxicity, with male animals seeing a considerable drop in estradiol and progesterone levels (p 0.001).

 

Female animals' menstrual cycle changes did not exhibit concentration dependency.

 

METHYLCYCLOHEXANE MARKET DYNAMICS

In order to transport hydrogen utilising methylcyclohexane, the Advanced Hydrogen Energy Chain Association for Technology Development (AHEAD) has launched the first international demonstration operation in history.

 

The New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organisation (NEDO) is funding this initiative, which will carry out a trial run for setting up a global hydrogen supply network.

 

Methylcyclohexane (MCH), a liquid at room temperature and pressure, is created in the supply country from hydrogen that has been chemically bonded to toluene and is used for storage and transportation.

 

Hydrogen is removed from MCH using a dehydrogenation procedure and provided as hydrogen gas to the consuming countries.

 

Methylcyclohexane (MCH) made in Brunei Darussalam has already been shipped to Japan, where it was split into hydrogen and toluene at a dehydrogenation facility on the Kawasaki city waterfront.

 

The hydrogen was then used to fuel a gas turbine at the Toa Oil Co. Ltd.-owned Mizue power plant. Currently, the procedure for returning the toluene that was split apart by dehydrogenation from Japan to Brunei Darussalam and rebinding it with hydrogen has begun.

 

The chain of hydrogen supply would be finished at this point, and circular stable operation would start.

 

The viability of shipping hydrogen in the form of methylcyclohexane in large quantities from Scotland to the Port of Rotterdam is the subject of a study being conducted by an international team.

 

In order to be carried in chemical carriers at room temperature and pressure, methylcyclohexane (MCH), a chemically stable liquid made from toluene and hydrogen, must first be converted into toluene.

 

Behind the project are Axens, Chiyoda, EnQuest, ERM, Koole Terminals, Port of Rotterdam, Storegga, and the Net Zero Technology Centre. To build a pilot project as a step before a large-scale export, engineering studies will be conducted.

The largest port in Europe committed to researching prospects for importing hydrogen at one of Koole's terminals using Chiyoda's technology, which extracts toluene and hydrogen from MCH.

 

Through the shipment of MCH from Brunei to Japan for splitting and the subsequent shipping of toluene back to Brunei, this technique has already been utilised to demonstrate a circular hydrogen supply chain.

 

MCH liquid is a very effective transporter since it contains 500 times more hydrogen per volume than hydrogen gas. Through the dehydrogenation procedure, MCH is catalytically converted into gaseous hydrogen for later usage.

 

MCH is reported to be produced more effectively than ammonia, another hydrogen transporter. The manufacture of ammonia requires 25% more energy per unit of hydrogen than the creation of MCH, according to the Ammonia Energy Association.
