INTRODUCTION

Platinum RTDs (Resistance Temperature Detectors) are sensing components constructed from pure platinum wire coils (wire wound) enclosed in ceramic or glass, or from thin layers of platinum coated on ceramic substrates. Positive temperature coefficients are seen in platinum RTDs.

 

Electrical resistance rises with temperature in a predictable and observable way. For the majority of industrial applications, platinum RTD components are the best sensor due to their unrivalled linearity and long-term stability.

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) uses a platinum resistance thermometer as their principal interpolation tool because platinum RTDs have remarkable long-term stability.
