NEW PRODUCT LAUNCH

The largest capacity hard disc based on traditional magnetic recording ever made by Western Digital was unveiled. The HGST Ultrastar DC HC530 employs two-dimensional magnetic recording (TDMR) redheads with perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR) to achieve consistent read performance. It has a 14 TB capacity. The new HDDs deliver up to 267 MB/s sustained transfer rate, somewhat more than previous-generation drives because of their extraordinarily high areal density. 

Based on Western Digital's newest helium-filled HelioSeal architecture (5th generation), the HGST Ultrastar DC HC530 hard drive has eight 1.75 TB PMR platters, TDMR heads with two readers, and TDMR heads with a single reader to minimise the impacts of inter-track interference and assure predictable read performance. The new platform employs upgraded (3rd generation) dual stage microactuators to improve head alignment and rotational vibration robustness, increasing the reliability of the datacenter-grade HDD in general. It also has eight 3.5-inch platters and new heads. 

The new HelioSeal platform has top and bottom attached disc clamps, RVFF sensors, humidity sensors, and a motor with a spindle speed of 7200 RPM. 

Only a 14 TB capacity model of the Ultrastar DC HC530 with 4Kn and 512e sectors will be offered. The hard drive will have a 512 MB buffer, a 512 RPM spindle speed, and a SATA or SAS interface.  Ultrastar DC HC530 HDDs equipped with hardware self-encryption, an immediate secure erase feature, TCG encryption, and TCG FIPS encryption. Regarding performance, HGST claims a sustained transfer rate of up to 267 MB/s, an average latency of 4.16 ms, and a seek time of 7.5 ms.
