QATAR ENERGY STORAGE MARKET

INTRODUCTION TOQATAR ENERGY STORAGE MARKET

Energy storage is the collection of energy produced at one moment for use at a later time in order to alleviate imbalances between energy demand and energy supply.

An accumulator or battery is a device used to store energy. Radiation, chemical, gravitational potential, electrical potential, electricity, increased temperature, latent heat, and kinetic energy are all examples of energy.

Energy storage entails transforming energy from difficult to store forms to more easily or economically storable forms.

Some systems provide short-term energy storage while others can last considerably longer. Hydroelectric dams, both conventional and pumped, currently account for the majority of bulk energy storage.

QATAR ENERGY STORAGE MARKETNEW PRODUCT LAUNCH

The Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation launched a pilot project to store electrical energy in batteries.

This is the first initiative of its kind in the state of Qatar. Energy storage units with a capacity of 1 MW / 4MWh were placed in the Nuaija station with the goal of storing energy during off-peak hours and utilising it during peak times.

The project was carried out in collaboration with Al Attiyah Group and Tesla, and the batteries and substation were connected to the local Nuaija station at a voltage of 11kV and regulated by the Distribution Control Centre.

This ground-breaking initiative will increase peak production capacity while also improving energy efficiency and sustainability.

This project was completed to high standards, with Al Attiyah Group constructing and preparing the civil work, as well as installing the station's equipment in collaboration with KAHRAMAA, and Tesla providing the energy storage system (batteries).

The project took nearly a year to complete because KAHRAMAA completed it ahead of schedule and began operations to benefit from it during the summer period, which is one of the highest periods of energy consumption in the State of Qatar compared to the rest of the year.

KAHRAMAA is happy that its personnel oversaw the project at every level. The team overcame various hurdles throughout implementation, the most important of which was managing and training its people.
