A rail car that provides head end power is referred to as a head end power car (also known as a generator car) (HEP).
Most heritage railways that operate older locomotives or train museums that take their equipment on excursions employ contemporary engines since they typically supply HEP.
Currently, the majority of trains are equipped with power cars that house diesel generators that provide electricity to coaches for a variety of uses, including lights, fans, and air conditioning.
The arrangement is known as End on Generation because the power vehicles are located at either end of the rake (EOG). In the HOG concept, the electric locomotive supplies electricity to the train to support the hotel load of the train.
Voltages from 25,000 volts AC to 600 volts DC can be used to deliver the current that locomotives need from overhead lines or third rail supplies.
The global Railway Generators market accounted for $XX Billion in 2023 and is anticipated to reach $XX Billion by 2030, registering a CAGR of XX% from 2024 to 2030.
According to sources, the Indian Railways intends to gradually remove generator cars from trains, which will result in the installation of 20,000 additional passenger seats/berths.
More than 500 trains at this time have two attached generator car bogies. In the initial phase, railroads will gradually remove one generator car from these trains.
This implies that Railways may fit more passenger bogies per generator car, resulting in more confirmed tickets for the passengers. According to other sources, the single generator car will be silent and help the railways save Rs 800 crore yearly.
Additionally, it should be mentioned that the Indian Railways have started a significant electrification initiative to electrify the entirety of their broad gauge network.
Therefore, passenger coaches will now take the place of the power coaches that were formerly used to transport electric machinery, lights, fans, and other essentials for the operation of the train.
This is also meant to ease the problems that railway customers have with confirmed tickets. A total of nearly 144 passenger berths would be created even if the railways added two three-tier coaches in place of the power coaches.
