The slip ring motors are started with rheostatic and liquid-immersed resistance starters. 

     

    The slip-ring induction motor has the following major advantages: Approximately 2.5 times more starting torque than squirrel cage induction motors. Even at a speed of zero, pull out torque can be achieved.

     

    Slip-ring induction motors, on the other hand, require only about 2.5 to 3.5 times the full load current for their low starting current.

     

    It is simple to control speed. One or more resistors are used in rheostatic starters to limit current and achieve the specified motor torque characteristics. During the initial phase, it eliminates successively one or more resistors in the rotor circuit. The mean torque required for starting is used to select the resistance value.

     

    The resistance necessary to produce the motor’s rated current and torque upon starting can be determined using the motor’s rated data. Timers are used to reduce resistance as the motor accelerates. The varying load conditions are not taken into account by the resistance’s design parameters.

     

    Each starter must be designed specifically for the motor, and once installed, its starting characteristics cannot often be changed to meet changing customer requirements.

     

    Resistance banks are heavy, complicated, and susceptible to malfunction due to the large number of contactors and other moving parts in them.
