    INTRODUCTION

Horticulture lighting is the use of artificial lighting fixtures to stimulate plant development when natural light is unavailable. Horticulture LEDs are solid-state light sources that emit photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) in the 400-700 nanometer (nm) range to induce photosynthesis in plants.

LEDs may also be utilized for production lighting in controlled situations, as well as supplementary and photoperiod illumination in greenhouses, however these applications are still in the works. Controlling spectral quality is also important for plant display lighting.

SOUTH KOREA HORTICULTURE LED LIGHTING MARKET NEW PRODUCT LAUNCH

Vertical Farm Built in a Tunnel with LED Lighting in South Korea. In South Korea, an abandoned tunnel has been converted into a vertical farm using LED growing lights to grow fruits and vegetables as a way to address challenges brought on by the harsh weather and a lack of agricultural area and labour.

A closed tunnel in Okchean, South Korea, was rented by NextOn, an indoor farming business, and it was transformed into a smart farm by installing vertically stacked layers for hydroponically growing crops with LED illumination. The business claims that it is the first tunnel-based indoor vertical farm in the world and the largest in the nation at 2300 square meters.

Using NextOn’s growing method, the farm grows sixty different species of corps. The temperature in the tunnel is between 10 and 22 degrees Celsius (50 and 72 degrees Fahrenheit), according to Choi Jae Bin, head of NextOn, which is adequate to optimize the growth conditions for the crops.

With the dilemma of global warming and the diminishing population working in agriculture, smart farms using LED lighting technology and systems are seen as a viable solution for sustainable food production.

The tunnel was constructed in 1970 for a significant South Korean highway and was abandoned in 2002. NextOn has reduced the cost of its development by half by using the abandoned tunnel. The farm has begun selling its produce to a grocery store chain and a chain of bakeries.
