A precision-guided munition (PGM, smart weapon, smart munition, or smart bomb) is a guided munition that is designed to hit a specific target with pinpoint accuracy, minimising collateral damage and increasing lethality against the intended target.
With the introduction of precision-guided weapons, older, low-tech bombs were renamed "unguided bombs," "dumb bombs," or "iron bombs."
The U.S Precision-Guided Munition Market accounted for $XX Billion in 2023 and is anticipated to reach $XX Billion by 2030, registering a CAGR of XX% from 2024 to 2030.
BAE Systems and Leonardo have announced a collaboration to develop new precision-guided solutions that would provide a spectrum of low-risk, cost-effective enhanced munitions for advanced, large-calibre weapon systems to US and allied military forces.
The two businesses plan to provide new versions of Leonardo's Vulcano munitions, which outperform currently existing precision-guided projectiles, in a range of gun systems, including BAE Systems' Advanced Cannon System (AGS) and the Mk 45 naval gun.
The AGS is now on board the Zumwalt class of destroyers in the United States Navy, and the Mk 45 is widely utilised by the Navy and allies.
The guidance system for the JDAM was developed in collaboration between the US Air Force and the US Navy, hence the "joint" in JDAM.
The Joint Direct Attack Munition (JDAM) is an all-weather precision-guided munitions guidance package that converts unguided bombs, or "dumb bombs," into all-weather precision-guided munitions.
An integrated inertial guidance system coupled with a Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver guides JDAM-equipped bombs, giving them a range of up to 15 nautical miles (28 km).
