A vein finder, also known as a vein locator or vein viewer, is a medical device used to help healthcare professionals locate veins in a patient's body.
It is particularly useful when drawing blood, inserting intravenous (IV) catheters, or performing other medical procedures that require access to veins.
Vein finders typically use near-infrared light to detect the location of veins beneath the surface of the skin. When the near-infrared light is shone onto the skin, hemoglobin in the blood absorbs the light, while surrounding tissues reflect it.
The device captures this information and processes it to create a real-time image of the veins, making them more visible and easier to locate.
The technology behind vein finders is non-invasive, safe, and generally well-tolerated by patients.
It reduces the need for multiple needle sticks, especially in patients with difficult-to-find veins, such as children, elderly individuals, or individuals with obesity or other medical conditions.

The first smartphone vein locator app ever created was called VeinSeek Pro. It converts a standard smartphone camera into a vein-viewing tool without the use of additional hardware. For the time being, VeinSeek Pro is accessible on the iPhone and other iOS devices everywhere.
The successor to VeinSeek, VeinScanner, has enhanced contrast, zoom capabilities, and simulated infra-red to more accurately mimic the appearance and feel of a specialised vein scanning instrument.
