The adhesion strength of the PVA/PAA adhesives is 5.9 MPa for glass substrates and 14.3 MPa for woods. The cohesive force of the dried PVA/PAA adhesives is based on the cross-linking of the polymer chains through physical entanglement and a high density of hydrogen bonds between PVA and PAA.

 

Numerous non complexed hydroxyl and/or carboxylic acid groups are present on the adhesive surface, which can form hydrogen bonds, coordination bonds, and van der Waals interactions with the surfaces of adherends to promote extremely strong adherence.

 

The adhesion strength of the resulting PVA/PAA-Lap adhesives can be further improved by the use of Laponite RD (Lap) clays.
