A Penn State team recently tested a novel X-ray power supply equipment by scanning an exploding star as part of its technological development. Although X-rays are frequently created in space, they are typically too intense for humans to perceive.

 

They emit from far-off supernovae and flash during solar flares. In fact, the heated gases encircling our solar system and nearby stars release X-rays that illuminate the entire night sky.

 

X-rays have a variety of wavelengths, or colours, similar to visible light, and each wavelength has a distinct meaning. The tREXS X-ray spectrometer was created to separate X-ray radiation into its spectrum, or component wavelengths, in order to learn more about the origin of the X-rays.

 

The extraordinary precision of tREXS is the first of two distinctive qualities that distinguish it from other spectrometers. When light enters a spectrometer, it bounces off a diffraction grating, splitting the light into its various wavelengths, which then spread out into a spectrum as they bounce off at slightly varying angles. The gratings on tREXS were created and configured in a way that allows for extremely precise wavelength separation.

 

They were aiming for the Cygnus Loop, a supernova remnant in the constellation Cygnus that is around 1,000 light years away and a source of diffuse X-rays. The next day, they were able to safely recover the payload and all of the onboard data.
