Ethiopia is a landlocked country in East Africa, and it is facing some of the world’s most pressing challenges related to climate change.
As temperatures rise due to global warming, so does the demand for refrigeration in Ethiopia. Currently, many households, farms, and businesses lack access to reliable cooling solutions—which can have devastating effects on food security, public health and economic development.
To offset this need for cooler temperatures, Ethiopia has turned to refrigerant technologies as an affordable solution that’s accessible even without grid electricity.
Refrigerants are substances used in air conditioning and temperature control systems–as well as home fridges–to maintain a cool space within a room or other enclosed area by transferring heat away from one area of the system and dissipating it into another part of the system or even directly outside into the environment.
Depending on their design specifics—like their components—refrigerants across different locations may vary widely. Some common examples include hydrocarbons (R-600a), chlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) and hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs). In Ethiopia specifically there is an increased use of HCFcs like R-22 due to their cheaper costs compared with alternatives.
Currently Ethiopia is lacking in the proper handling, installation, and use of refrigerants. They have yet to adopt a disposal plan for hazardous refrigerant gases that extends beyond a few demonstration projects. This has resulted in toxicity issues due to improper disposal and lack of environmental awareness.
For instance studies found CO2 concentrations as high as 7000 ppm (parts per million) within an Ethiopian household—which can be extremely dangerous.
To combat these issues Ethiopia needs stronger policies around complete system design life cycle—from production to installation and post-use treatment of used solutions such as recycling or safe disposal—as well as improved education surrounding the proper usage of these solutions throughout the country
The Ethiopia refrigerant market accounted for $XX Billion in 2022 and is anticipated to reach $XX Billion by 2030, registering a CAGR of XX% from 2023 to 2030.
