    INTRODUCTION

    A vertical speed indicator (VSI), often called a rate of climb and descent indicator (RCDI), is a device that shows how quickly an aircraft is climbing or descending.

     

    The vertical speed is calculated by the VSI using the aircraft pitot-static system, and the result is shown on a traditional needle and circular scale instrument or on a ribbon at the side of an EADI electronic flight instrument system.

     

    A barometer capsule is housed in a sealed casing in a basic VSI. The pitot-static system supplies static pressure to the capsule, and the casing is also connected to it via a calibrated nozzle.

     

    There is a delay between a change in static pressure and the pressure that is felt inside the casing because the nozzle inhibits the flow of air.

     

    As a result, as the aircraft ascends (or lowers), the pressure inside the capsule will drop (rise), but it does so more slowly inside the case due to the nozzle’s presence.

     

    A mechanical system translates the movement of the capsule into the movement of a needle.
