    INTRODUCTION

Due to the current COVID-19 situation, European people are mostly avoiding public transportation. The e-bikes are a safe, convenient and affordable alternative to public transportation.

On comparison to other transportations, e-bikes are easy to charge and do not require additional investments for supportive infrastructure. And this gonna be a major advantage to boost the sales of e-bike in the europe.

The two most important challenges in the e-bike market were motor and battery. The motor provides the force and battery helps to store as well as supplies the power.

One of the key challenges faced by e-bike manufacturers was controlling the motor speed and torque across the wide range of speeds and loading conditions.

The battery capacity of an e-bike must be used efficiently and increase in the battery size leads to improve the performance of the battery plus increase the weight of an e-bike.

Therefore, selecting the right battery capacity in operation would be important for battery manufacturers. And also consumers are highly concerning on with their technological devices such as smartphones and tablets.

The e-bike manufacturers had to increase their research capabilities on providing functionality and intelligence in e-bike that would be capable of operating with smartphones as well as tablets with a minimum amount of battery power.

The majority of European bike manufacturers were shifting their technology hub to mid motors due to its advantages, Such as smaller size, lighter weight, lesser noise and seamless integration with bike frames.

    RECENT LAUNCH

Fulcrum has introduced the Speed 25, a new lightweight wheelset with a 26mm profile and bladed spokes that attempts to combine aero performance with comfort and usability via a 21mm internal rim width.

Side on shot of the Fulcrum Speed 25 wheel in the studio, with the logo design dead centre at the top.

The Speed 25 are optimised for tubeless setup without the need for weight-adding rim tape and feature a 2-Way Fit system – Clincher or Tubeless – with a non-drilled bridge. When compared to ordinary bearings, USB ceramic bearings offer a 50% reduction in rolling resistance.

The disparity between the symmetrical front rim and the asymmetrical rear rim, according to the company, is the most important component of the wheel design, which ensures superb aerodynamics and exceptional sensitivity.

Fulcrum goes on to say that the asymmetrical rear profile has helped them obtain improved dish angles and lateral stiffness, both of which are important in uphill sprints.

The spokes do not contact, in keeping with Fulcrum’s design concept of perfect alignment of the nipple with the spoke.

This method has a number of advantages, including long-term durability, resistance, and rigidity. This spoke lacing also guarantees no under load creaks, which can occur when spokes rub, which is important for a lightweight wheelset designed for climbing.

In more than 30 European cities, 16,000 additional e-bikes will be deployed as part of the latest expansion of the micro mobility services offered by European scooter operator Bolt.

With the e-SMART bike 2.0 model, you can move around an urban setting safely and nimbly while still controlling the bicycle.

When riding a bicycle, the rider’s body is positioned more vertically due to the engine’s position, which ensures his safety and enhances his experience and maneuverability, particularly in curves and challenging terrain.

NIU Technologies announced that it will introduce additional micro mobility products in Europe, such as the KQi1 Sport and KQi Youth kickscooters, the BQi C3 Pro ebike with cargo accessories, and more.

The peddle-assist BQi C3 Pro ebike has a top speed of 25 km/h and a remarkable range of up to 100 km thanks to its innovative dual battery system.

The 48V 19.2Ah capacity of the two small, interchangeable batteries on the ebike allow it to travel twice as far as similar models from rival brands.

The BQi C3 Pro has a cutting-edge Gates Carbon Drive that offers riders a cleaner, quieter, and more dependable solution with little maintenance.

The BQi C3 Pro has an integrated rear rack and new optional accessories like a front basket with a 10kg payload and a rear basket with a 30kg payload that can be installed discretely onto the bike.

Four new electric bike models have just been introduced by Gazelle Bikes, a Dutch electric bicycle manufacturer renowned for its more than a century of top-notch bicycle design.

Both the new 2023 Avignon C380 HMB and Arroyo C5 were constructed with ease of city commuting in mind. Additionally, the Avignon C380 has an Enviolo stepless gearbox with automatic shifting, which enables the CVT hub to maintain the bike in the appropriate gear based on the rider’s pedalling effort and pace.

Another step-through type, the Gazelle Arroyo C5, is a bit more of an all-purpose electric bike that can manage both short, leisurely rides and longer, more strenuous tours through the countryside.

It’s a good thing that the bike has a Shimano Nexus 5 internally geared rear hub because it also has a 75 Nm Bosch Performance Line mid-drive motor. Bosch’s 500 Wh battery completes the powertrain.

The Flluid-2 and Flluid-3 are two brand-new electric bike models from FUELL, the electric bike firm founded by internationally famous motorcycle designer Erik Buell.

With two detachable battery packs with a combined capacity of 2 kWh, the Flluid-2 is referred to be a “ultra-long-range powerhouse”.

This twice the battery capacity of the original FUELL Flluid-1 and makes it possible to travel an astonishing 225 miles (362 km) on a single charge.

The Flluid-3 offers a single 1 kWh battery, which should be sufficient for anyone who can make do with a still-impressive 110 mi (177 km) range, as an easier-to-mount step-through option.

Both models come with 750 W continuous-rated Valeo mid-drive motors that may be throttled, although in Europe, the maximum speed is only 6 km/h (3.7 mph) to comply with regulations.

Although both the EU and US versions of the motor are advertised as having 130 Nm of torque, the motor will also have a 250 W rating in Europe, making it one of the most powerful mid-drives currently available on retail e-bikes.

The French company Upway, which refurbishes and distributes electric bikes from several brands, has opened an office in the United States.

A front-load cargo bike (Digital e-Front Load) is a bicycle with an expanded front wheelbase that can fit a body to carry up to three children or large objects.

The addition of the new line of cargo bikes broadens PEUGEOT Cycles’ selection of electric vehicles to better satisfy the demands of an increasing number of consumers, including families living in cities where bicycle-friendly infrastructure (bike lanes, parking spaces, etc.) is being built out.

Companies of all sizes, from the craftsperson who turns a two-carrier cargo bike into a new work tool to logistics firms looking for a complementing and competitive offer of light vehicles tailored for last-mile delivery.

The start-up Beweel will design and produce the new linked electric bikes that target B2C and B2B markets.

The primary dealer networks of Cycleurope Industries will provide the whole Peugeot Cycles line as a result of its expansion.

For its part, Beweel will use its own distribution networks to advertise the three new linked bicycle models.

New electric scooter and electric bike models have been introduced by Yamaha Europe.  Also unveiled by Yamaha was the eagerly anticipated, production-ready electric NEO scooter.

It will provide electric power equal to 50cc and is based on the E02 idea from the Tokyo Motor Show.

It has all the current step-through scooter’s lines, but more importantly, it has detachable, interchangeable batteries that make riding an electric scooter much more convenient for the user.

It raises concerns regarding the amount of storage space under the seat, but that will undoubtedly be clarified once the NEO’s are launched.

They store directly under the saddle.  Yamaha Motor Europe claims that despite the fact that it has traditionally distinguished itself from other motorcycle manufacturers by using its trademark blue colour, it picked this new aqua colour for its electric range because it is more calming.

When it comes to the two concepts, the E01 is unmistakably a contemporary scooter design, but it has a significantly different appearance than its combustion Yamaha Europe counterparts, the TMAX, XMAX, NMAX, and D’elight.

It was obviously intended to be a cousin, with a family resemblance to indicate that they are connected but with its own unique identity still intact.

Having a ridesharing experiment in an unnamed large European city is the plan for the E01, Yamaha Motor. Two things will result from that.

Users in that city will be the first to utilise the new scooter because Yamaha wants to learn more about what urban riders desire from a 125cc-equivalent electric scooter.

This trial is not yet scheduled, although it is most likely to take place at some point.

The fact that Yamaha is referring to it as the B01 idea sets it apart from the E0-something naming scheme it has so far developed for its electric scooters. But there’s a little more going on here.

    E-BIKE REGULATIONS IN EUROPE

The legal maximum assisted speed for eBikes in the EU and the UK is 25 kph. E-bikes are still permitted to provide electrical assistance above this speed, but riders are not permitted to pedal them faster.

Some bicycles can even be charged while you are pedalling.  The EU and UK laws now specify that an electric bicycle must have a motor with a continuous rated power output of 250W or less in order to be categorised as a “eBike” or Pedelec.

In the UK or the EU, there is no specific licence needed to operate an e-bike that satisfies the requirements of a standard pedelec.

However, e-bike riders in the UK must be 14 years of age or older. You need a licence and the bike needs to be registered as an electric vehicle in order to ride speed pedelecs or more potent freight e-Bikes. There will typically be some sort of road tax.

    EUROPE E-BIKE MARKET RECENT DEVELOPMENT

The electric bicycle “Doodle” from EMotorad will be released first, with a premium and ultra-premium line of e-bikes following in the upcoming months.

The business stated that it plans to sell about 3,000 e-bikes in these five nations within the first several quarters.

It intends to focus on five important nations in the early phase of its expansion: Spain, Italy, Germany, France, and the Netherlands.

These nations will allow it to expand exponentially across the continent. The company anticipates a quarter-over-quarter rise of between 30 and 40% in Europe, which it views as a market with tremendous potential.

Under the brand name XD4, HNF-Nicolai has introduced a new line of electric bicycles. There are now six types of the XD4 electric bike from HNF-Nicolai: the All Terrain, All Terrain Rohloff, Speed, Adventure, Eco Touring, and Eco Naked.

There are available S-pedelec and e-bike vehicles with either a typical bicycle chain or a low-maintenance carbon belt.

The third, fourth, and fifth iterations of the XD4 are equipped with a Bosch motor that can produce up to 85 Nm of torque and reaches a top speed of 25 kph (16 mph) on some models or 45 kph (28 mph) on others.

The Rohloff edition bicycle has the most expensive drivetrain in the lineup thanks to the Rohloff SpeedHub 500 e14. The two Eco variants and the Adventure cycle have a chain drive, making them the less expensive models.

With no rear rack or mudguards, the entry-level Eco Naked is the most basic model in the line and is also the lightest at 23 kg (about 51 lbs).

    RECENT DEVELOPMENT AND INNOVATION

1 Super Soco  Electric bikes Super Soco Wanderer and Hunter are now available throughout Europe. The urban-focused TS Street Hunter roadster and a retro-inspired TC Wanderer have been added to the lineup of the Chinese electric bike manufacturer. Both vehicles are entry-level electric motorcycles for commuting.
2 Gudereit  The new ET-13.5 Evo and ET-12.5 Evo, a pair of step-through electric bicycles with some outstanding innovation and features, were just released in the UK

Two new versions of city-focused commuter motorcycles from electric motorbike manufacturer Super Soco are now available for everyday commuting and brief excursions. The cost of both bikes is GBP 3799.

The Super Soco TS Street Hunter and TC Wanderer are both constructed on the same platform and have an electric motor located in the back hub that has a stated top speed. Each bike has a single replaceable battery that, according to the manufacturer, can be fully recharged using a regular household power outlet in just 3.5 hours.

Although the Super Soco TS Hunter is a sporty roadster with an angular and aggressive look, its performance is anything but sporty according to the specifications. The Street Hunter comes in four colors: Storm Grey, Black, Platinum White, and Charcoal Blue. It has wheels on the front and back. On a single charge, the TS Hunter is said to have a range of just about 60 kilometers.

The Super Soco TC Wanderer features a raised handlebar, a round LED headlight, block-pattern tires, and a retro-inspired look that is more reminiscent of a scrambler.

Ceramic Blue, Vintage Green, or Stormy Grey are the three colors that are offered for the Wanderer. A second battery that extends the TC Wanderer’s range on a single charge is available.

Two more models from the German company Gudereit have been added to the increasing roster of urban electric bikes. The new ET-13.5 Evo and ET-12.5 Evo, a pair of step-through electric bicycles with some outstanding innovation and features, were just released in the UK.

Starting things off is the Gudereit ET-13.5 Evo commuter e-bike, which has a Neodrive Z20 rear hub motor and a Pinion 12-speed transmission with a 28 lb-ft (40 nm) torque rating. Gates Carbon Drive belt, which is silent and requires no maintenance, transmits power to the back wheel.

Pinion’s gearboxes are renowned for their durability because they are weatherproof and can go a long way before needing maintenance. Additionally, they provide accurate shifts even when the vehicle is under load or at a standstill. The Neodrive motor on the bike is also quite impressive.

The downtube of the ET-13.5 Evo from Gudereit houses a 725 watt-hour battery pack, which is fairly substantial. The battery pack on the ET-13.5 Evo is larger than those found on many other e-bikes, so we can expect quite a deal of range from this bike, especially if your journeys are limited to urban areas, even though the brand doesn’t offer any claimed range estimates.

The ET-13.5 Evo also has a Cane Creek Thudbuster seatpost for enhanced comfort and an SR Suntour Raidon suspension fork. Additionally, Supernova’s strong lights assure your visibility to other motorists and brighten the road in front of you.

If you think this cost is a bit excessive, the less expensive ET-12.5 Evo might be a better fit for your requirements. It does bring some amazing technology to the table, such as the tried-and-true Gates CDX belt drive and the Bosch Performance Line CX motor. The bike also includes an SR Sunstour Raidon suspension fork and a Cane Creek Thudbuster seatpost.

COVID-19 IMPACT ON EUROPE E-BIKE MARKET

In Europe, the demand for e-bikes increased after the outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic, as the consumer preference changed from public transport towards personal vehicles and e-bikes came out as an economical option for people, which boosted the demand during 2020.

Apart from the increasing consumer preference toward recreational and adventure activities , the adoption of e-bike applications in several sectors, like logistics and e-bike rental services, is expected to drive the Europe e-bike market.

To overcome this pandemic, the European Commission has the recovery plans by urging the EU member states to prominently include cycling in their plans.

Only six European member states are properly integrating cycling into their National Recovery and Resilience Plans.

Belgium has championed cycling by allocating 473 EUR million for infrastructure. Germany’s absence is the most prominent among the EU countries that have yet to include cycling in their post-pandemic recovery plans.

Other countries that are lagging behind, include Spain, whose plan commits to creating sustainable , safe and connected mobility in urban areas but fails to include any explicit  reference to cycling.

A total of almost 1.3 EUR billion has been committed so far through the National Recovery and Resilience Plans to improve european people’s mobility patterns while creating green jobs and boosting the economy and growth of e-bike market.

European people consumed greener e-mobility over buying cars or using public transport, which resulted in a staggering 52% increase in sales with 10.6 billion EUR in 2020.

Production of parts and accessories in Europe also spiked in 2020, reaching 3 billion EUR, which has a positive impact on the whole production value-chain.

The outstanding performance by the bicycle, e-bike, parts and accessories sectors also boosted jobs, with a solid 30% increase in employment across the sector.

The ever increasing demand for e-bikes seems to be helping the industry to recover rapidly from the impact of COVID-19.
