The electric motor that propels an electric vehicle’s wheels is known as the traction motor. Usually placed close to the wheels, the traction motor is connected to the wheels either directly or through a gearbox. In order to turn the wheels, the traction motor converts electrical energy from the vehicle’s battery or another power source into mechanical energy. An electronic controller that manages the motor’s supply of electrical power controls the motor’s operation.
The controller instructs the traction motor to accelerate when the driver depresses the accelerator pedal. The engine produces greater torque as it spins more quickly, which is utilised to turn the wheels and propel the car ahead.
The controller decreases the electrical power provided to the traction motor when the driver applies the brakes, forcing it to slow down and produce less torque. In some circumstances, the motor may also function as a generator, creating electrical power that is stored in the battery utilising the kinetic energy of the car. Overall, the EV traction motor is an essential part of how an electric vehicle functions, enabling it to move effectively, silently, and without emitting any emissions.
The market push at the moment is in favour of permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSM), due to relatively easy construction, cooling and packaging benefits.
